Whole-School English Language Policy
A. Principles:
1. We strive to provide a language-rich environment for every student to develop her proficiency in English.
2. We believe that every student is able to excel in English.
3. We strive to maximize students’ learning opportunities of the English Language with internal and external resources.
 
B. Objectives:
1. To develop students’ proficiency in the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
2. To develop students’ capacity to learn content subjects through English.
3. To foster students’ interest in learning English for further studies, international communication and entertainment.
 
C. Strategies:
I. To enhance the language environment conducive to learning English, we
w organize many major school events in English to celebrate students’ learning outcomes (performances, presentations and display of students’ work)
w train students to be MCs and announcers in English for most major school events
  1. set up an English Zone to encourage students to use English for entertainment and for self-access learning
  2. have an English Club to co-ordinate regular lunchtime and English Zone activities
  3. organise cross-curricular activities in English
  4. require students to keep a record of their participation in the school’s English activities by collecting chops for their English Passports
  5. have English assembly four days a week, with all announcements, promotion of activities, presentations and teachers’ sharing in English
  6. display learning materials around the campus mainly in English
  7. publish the Bee, our English school newspaper, twice a year
  8. issue bilingual notices to students and their parents
  9. organize English study trips
 
II. To develop students’ English proficiency, we
  1. adopt English as the medium of instruction for the majority of our students
  2. encourage students to read extensively by holding a morning reading session every Wednesday during Homeroom time
  3. encourage students to write their personal responses to the local English newspaper
  4. encourage students to join interschool speaking and writing competitions
  5. cater for learner diversity in class by employing different teaching strategies such as cooperative learning, flipped learning,etc.
  6. integrate language arts activities, including poems and songs, into the English language curriculum
  7. conduct Reading-pals Programme to enhance S3 students’ reading and presentation skills and help S1 students develop a reading habit
 
III. To strengthen students’ capacity to learn content subjects in English with the support of the Language Across the Curriculum (LAC) Committee, we
  1. set up effective school based LAC infrastructure in order to enhance learning and teaching effectiveness
  2. promote collaboration among English teachers and content subject teachers
  3. develop teacher professionalism and awareness of the language needs of students among content subject teachers
  4. implement the pre-S1 Bridging programme in English for all new students 
  5. encourage students to take greater responsibility for their own learning through independent reading and e-learning assignments
  6. promote extensive reading through Reading Across the Curriculum events and activities
